However, to Heath's surprise, he finds the alley filled with zombies and they both decide to hold-out on the rooftop for the night, hoping the herd of zombies moves away by the time they wake-up. He asks Heath if he knew Denise, Heath responding by saying she was his girlfriend, leading Harlan to sorrowfully apologize for Heath's loss. Heath and Scott have a very good friendship. Heath and Tara fight for their lives as the zombies overwhelm them, with Heath making a stand on the back of a military Humvee, trying to rescue Tara from the zombies. They eventually make it back to Alexandria, passing burnt structures on their way to the gate. As soon as they meet in "First Time Again", Glenn accepts him as one of the team, and they work together to clear out the store which could potentially distract the zombie horde that was unleashed from the quarry. Once the two soldiers return to Alexandria, Dwight enlists Heath to help him remove a large portion of the Saviors. Hours before dawn, the group assembles after taking down two guards at the front entrance of the Saviors' compound. Heath is present during Negan's first supply-trip to the safe-zone. The fate of The Walking Dead’s mysteriously-absent major character, Heath, is finally confirmed and it connects to the story of Season 9.

Retracing their steps, the group finds themselves surrounded in all directions and retreat into a nearby pet store, where they discuss their next move. He quickly steps in and comforts Aaron over Eric's death, telling him he knows what he is feeling, and they hug each other. He does well while Vincent almost dies. However, after Rick takes lead of the Alexandria Safe-Zone from Douglas, he defends Rick and his group against Nicholas when the latter shows signs of an uprising. He later attends Abraham's funeral with Denise. While doing so, Heath is approached by Nicholas, who inquires about Rick's leadership, telling Heath that he has taken over "their" safe-zone, and that they practically handed him the "keys to the kingdom". Heath soon comes to the scene, asking if everyone has gathered enough supplies. After dropping Maggie, and Sophia there, Heath, and the others, head back to Alexandria, Paul Monroe joining them on their way back. After finding Sturgess' hat, they come across Sturgess himself (who had left the group in fear during the earlier walker attack) being devoured by walkers. The only thing he has that passes for humor is his occasional sarcasm.

After Annie and David die while the five of them are escaping the town, Heath and Michonne work together to help an injured Scott through the creeks.
