Maggie quickly adjusts to life inside the Alexandria Safe-Zone, and adapts well to the community (more so than some of the others within the group).
Rick recalls that Negan's bat was covered in walker blood, leading them to realize that the Saviors used their weapons to infect them. After returning to the Hilltop, Brianna explains to Maggie that the food supply is dwindling down, and now with the residents from Alexandria joining, it will be even worse. She and Glenn later came across Rick, his son Carl, and Michonne. After Rick makes his speech, Maggie is seen chanting "RICK GRIMES!" However when she discovers that he nearly killed them, she locks him up, but seems reluctant to do so.
She is greeted by Brianna, and the two talk about how the apocalypse changed their personalities. She often struggles with her own insecurities as well, worrying about what people (including Glenn) think of her, even within the most least affecting situations, and trying to hide her emotions so as not to have her weaknesses be fully exposed.
As they escape over the wall, Oscar is shot, and Maggie shoots him in the head to prevent reanimation. Maggie and Glenn's relationship becomes strained. After leaving Woodbury, Glenn tells Rick that he would never have said anything about the prison for Maggie's safety. Maggie is alarmed to learn that Carl has fled the Hilltop and calls a meeting.
Maggie and Glenn test Glenn's idea of stabbing the walkers in the head through the fence and it seems to work.
The following morning, Maggie buries the dead.[18]. The two then reconnect with the surviving others on the highway. Jesus compliments the speed at which the Barrington House was repaired. Rick explains that he is no better than him, since he killed just as much husbands and wives as Negan did. Dwight is watching Negan as he packs up some supplies.
Michonne suggests they stay put and make sure the roamers head for the ocean. She tells Tara that Glenn spared his life, despite Nicholas' attempt to kill him. In the episode "Strangers", they meet Fr. She blatantly says that what he's done is only towards himself and when Gregory says that Negan is reasonable, she angrily reminds him that Negan killed Glenn and punches him. She seems relieved when Eugene answers. Some time passes and Maggie is eventually elected as the new president and relocates to the Commonwealth. Her telling him, in the face of all this, "Do whatever you're gonna do. Glenn apologizes to Maggie for leaving her in the midst of the roamer attack, but, Maggie accepts that he did what he had to.
Negan then kills one of the group, which also included Daryl, Rosita, Glenn, and Michonne, although it not shown who is killed. Upon learning of Gregory's betrayal of his people, Jesus proclaims that the Hilltop has found a new leader in Maggie. In the season finale, "The First Day of the Rest of Your Life," Maggie learns that Sasha has been captured by the Saviors, Dwight is offering to help Alexandria, and that Negan knows about Rick's plan to rebel. Maggie and Andrea are shown to have a good friendship. Sasha decides to take Maggie to the Hilltop and keep her safe. Michonne asks Maggie if she's sure she wants to send so many troops, to which Maggie replies she wishes she could sparse more. After Glenn's tragic death, Maggie begins to beat Rick and blames him for the death of Glenn and not doing anything about it despite the fact that they would all be killed if Rick had done anything. Once Lori realizes she's about to hemorrhage to death, she orders Maggie to cut her open.
Pamela interrupts them by asking about the destruction of the community, and Maggie, annoyed, asks who she is. Alden explains that the other Saviors escaped but that he stayed as he has no reason to follow Negan anymore.
She is shocked to hear Michonne screaming "OPEN THE GATE!
Glenn moves into the same cell as Maggie. Despite some hesitation, Maggie eventually agrees. In "The Key" Maggie along with Rosita, Enid and Michonne head to a meeting after finding a mysterious care package outside of the Hilltops gates. Her father comes to terms with her relationship with Glenn and promises he won't be a burden to her. Maggie laments and says she won't kill him, but Negan grabs her wrist and holds the gun to his head. She adds that she's having Dante find a comfortable place for them to sleep.
