This is a tough one - both are as good as it gets. Agree to disagree then. But it would be interesting to see some Estel examples of a technically fantastic 'killer pass' or through ball by Zidane. I do rule in favor of Zidane being more critical to his team than Xavi or Iniesta alone, however it is quite Ludacris to say that Xavi could not keep the ball as well as Zidane or that his ball holding capabilities were not as strong. Xavi is a great player, but their have been many like him. Xavi playing second fiddle from a deeper (more defensive) position, produced as many assists and as many goals as Zidane, added to better work rate and better ball retention than Zidane could offer. I have seen him play a lot, especially in champions league and the national team, and he never seemed a world class player. Who would you rather have on your team a prime pele or a prime Lionel Messi? Sure, if you play counter attacking football (which Barcelona has never been known for), Zidane is very arguably a decidedly better player for it. Xavi would be pretty average should he play for a mid-table club. Althought Zidane was not on top of his game, but he did create some great chances against Madrid in 1998 final. A direct conclusion from the Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition is that a player's skill at choosing what type of pass to make in a given situation is a key determinant of a team's ability to win. Zidane is considered one of the greatest players of all time, so all round you could say he was better at more aspects of his game, but what Xavi does, he does better than anybody so I don't think you can compare the two...
